Los Angeles– This Saturday, January 21, 2017, the Los Angeles chapter of AF3IRM will carve out much-needed spaces for women and communities of color at the Women’s March on Washington in Los Angeles. Beginning at 9am, they will lead a contingent of women of color and their allies through the march and later will hold an alternative end rally to the official closing program.

This event, in partnership with the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, will be a special Chant Down the Walls that will center the voices and struggles of communities of color. Those interested in joining are encouraged to meet at the the corner of Aliso and Alameda at 12 noon. At that time, women of color, musicians, poets, advocates, families and allies will gather outside the Metropolitan Detention Center in downtown Los Angeles. Women representatives from local grassroots groups, collectives and organizations will speak during the event. Performers will include award-winning poet, Faith Santilla, a Los Angeles-based women mariachi trio, La Victoria, and members of the singer-songwriter collective, Cuicani.

“We seek to highlight through our words, poetry, music and activism the injustices related to the treatment of immigrants, our solidarity with those incarcerated, and the issues women color face. This event is important because we are more than just Anti-Trump, we are pro-woman and we have an actual vision to put forward. We in AF3IRM are calling for genuine liberation,” stated Kyrie Sanchinelli-Salazar, chapter coordinator of AF3IRM Los Angeles.

AF3IRM asserts that all must move beyond simply “a march for human rights” and actively protest the policies of the fascist Donald Trump and his platform of misogyny, racism and ableism. The women of AF3IRM have and will continue to fight for the rights of all women-identified people, including immigrant, undocumented or not, indigenous, disabled, LGBTQ and other women whose voices have been largely left out of the Women’s March in Los Angeles.
