FROM THE CONFERENCE ORGANIZERS:
This conference will engage activists and scholars who were involved with the Third World Liberation Front Strikes at San Francisco State University and UC Berkeley during the late 1960s with issues and concerns facing younger generations and youth today. While today there are divisions between our various communities, at the same time, there exists past lessons of solidarity where positive change occurred towards the building of a multiracial democracy. Through speaker panels, cultural performances and dialogue, this conference will learn from the past, discuss and highlight community issues that unite and divide our different racial and ethnic communities.

Breakout Discussion Group #1: CRG Film Screening of Ethnic Studies On Strike 1999 by Irum Sheik

Center for Race and Gender (CRG)
The CRG, which was born out of the historic 1999 Ethnic Studies Student Strike, will show the film “Ethnic Studies. On Strike 1999” by Irum Sheik. A panel discussion with ’99 TwLF members, the film’s director and faculty witnesses will follow to acknowledge the genealogy of the CRG in the context student strikes of 1999 and 1969. The panel will be moderated by Prof. Paola Bacchetta from Gender and Womens Studies, UC Berkeley
Current students involved in negotiations with University administration will also be present to inform and update about the present situation of the CRG and ongoing negotiations to oppose the restructuring of the Center. We view this conference and break out discussion group to clarify and deal constructively with the campus’ ongoing commitment to racial equality and the continued study of race, gender and sexuality at Cal.
